AuthOMath results obtained were presented at the most prestigious mathematics teachers conference in Spain

The AuthOMath project results were presented at the 21 Jornadas de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje de las Matemáticas (21 JAEM; Mathematics Teaching and Learning Conference) in Santander, Spain from June 30th to July 3rd. This conference is the most prestigious one devoted to mathematics teachers, providing an excellent platform to showcase our findings and discuss their implications at the secondary education level.

María Sanz-Ruiz (University of Cantabria) presented the work ‘Resolviendo ecuaciones con STACK / Solving equations with STACK’ executed with José Manuel Diego Mantecón and Zaira Ortiz-Laso. The main results will be published in the conference proceedings:

AuthOMath results at FAME conference

AuthOMath results obtained in Spain were presented at the FAME conference in Utrecht

The results of the AuthOMath project were successfully presented at the FAME (Feedback & Assessment in Mathematics Education) conference held in Utrecht from the 5th to 7th of June. This conference, that was the ERME topic conference on assessment and feeback, brought together leading experts in this field, providing an excellent platform for us to showcase our findings and discuss their implications with a broad audience.

María Sanz-Ruiz (University of Cantabria) presented the work ‘Elaborated feedback for interpreting graphs in Secondary Education’ executed in collaboration with Luis Miguel Soto, Zaira Ortiz-Laso and José Manuel Diego-Mantecón. This study showed that medium-achieving students correct common graph interpretation errors with a few hints, while low-achieving students usually find feedback overwhelming.

Discovering AuthOMath at UC

The University of Cantabria team celebrates the Discovering AuthOMath event at the Faculty of Sciences

On Wednesday, May 8, at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Cantabria, the Discovering AuthOMath event was held, which brought together high school and university teachers.

The initial session was led by José Manuel Diego Mantecón, from the University of Cantabria, who presented the AuthOMath project, addressing its involved institutions, objectives, results and associated platforms. Subsequently, Camilo Sua, from the University of Valencia, offered guidelines on the design of mathematical tasks in digital environments, illustrating these guidelines with concrete examples using GeoGebra. Subsequently, María Sanz Ruiz, from the University of Cantabria, guided attendees in incorporating mathematical tasks in STACK and in providing formative feedback.

After a break, participants had the opportunity to explore examples of mathematical tasks available. After exploring the tasks, they were asked to create their own mathematical task that incorporated a GeoGebra applet and formative feedback.

Final project meeting

The University of Cantabria hosted the Final Project Meeting of the AuthOMath project in Santander

The three-day event (2-4 May 2024) brought together representatives from four organisations participating in the project: Heidelberg University of Education, the University of Edinburgh, Johannes Kepler University and the University of Cantabria. The meeting, held in the Faculty of Sciences, commenced with a summary of previous project steps. Subsequently, participants deliberated on the project’s executed work and collaborated on its final steps.

Participants also observed how undergraduate students, tentative secondary education mathematics teachers, at the University of Cantabria interacted during a mathematics education course involving STACK and GeoGebra. These students were asked to create a mathematical task within STACK, integrating a GeoGebra applet, and receiving adaptive feedback.

Discovering AuthOMath

Digital tools are increasingly present in the mathematics classroom. GeoGebra has gained popularity in secondary education for its ability to generate dynamic representations. STACK (System for Teaching Assessment using a Computer Algebra Kernel) is emerging as a promising tool that allows generating tasks with random data and providing specific feedback on errors made by students.

The AuthOMath project, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ program, has dedicated two and a half years to the integration of these two tools. Its main objective is to offer teaching guidelines for creating mathematical tasks that incorporate dynamic materials and provide feedback adapted to students’ errors.

To present the advances achieved by researchers from the Heidelberg University of Education (Germany), the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), the Johannes Kepler University (Austria) and the University of Cantabria, the Discovering AuthOMath conference is organized at the Faculty of Sciences from the University of Cantabria. This event, aimed at secondary education mathematics teachers, will take place on Wednesday, May 8.

University of Cantabria Science Week Festival

In the framework of the Science Week of the University of Cantabria (13-24 November 2023), the Faculty of Science hosted an outstanding exhibition and poster competition, in which several research groups actively participated. Among them, the Open STEAM group presented a sample of their work in the framework of the AuthOMath project through the poster: ‘Resolviendo ecuaciones lineales con STACK / Solving linear equations with STACK’. We are pleased to report that the corresponding poster was awarded with the second prize!

I International GeoGebra Conference

Mathías Tejera and Cecilia Russo delivered a presentation at the I International GeoGebra Conference, which took place at the University of Cordoba in Spain from November 9 to November 12, 2023.

The presentation, entitled ‘AuthOMath: innovación de la enseñanza de las matemáticas a través de la integración de GeoGebra y STACK / AuthOMath: innovation in mathematics teaching through the integration of GeoGebra and STACK‘ aimed to show the potential of combining these tools.

CADGME in Catania

María Sanz-Ruiz presented some of the work carried out in the University of Cantabria as a contributed talk: ‘Formative feedback on linear equations’. This talk was part of CADGME (Conference on Digital Tools in Mathematics Education). The event took place between the 11th and 13th of September, 2023, in the University of Catania. SEIEM XXVI

María Sanz-Ruiz presented part of the work carried out in the University of Cantabria in the poster “Retroalimentacion de ecuaciones lineales en STACK (Feedback of linear equations in STACK)” during the XXVI Symposium of the SEIEM in Logroño, Spain. SEIEM stands for Sociedad Española de Investigación en Educación Matemática (Spanish Society for Research in Mathematics Education).
